The wheel seal is a cap that is pressed into place over the wheel bearing to provide protection and lubrication. The axle shaft fits through the wheel bearing and the wheel seal fits tightly around the axle to create the space where the grease is contained.
Wheel Seal Problems
Dirt and debris can be harmful to your truck’s wheel bearings, especially if they get ground into the bearings while you’re traveling at a high speed. Bearings also need to be surrounded by lubrication while they’re in motion. If the dirt and debris get into the grease around the bearings, they will grind into the bearings and shorten their lifespan. Wheel seals keep the grease in and the dirt out. Wheel seals have a rubber lip that becomes weathered and cracked over time, causing grease to leak out. Without this lubricant around them, the wheel bearings can become prematurely worn.
